What happens in my sessions

Bottling up feelings can become very draining and make living your life very difficult. My sessions involve you and I meeting, talking and listening together with the mutual purpose of paying careful attention to your life and how you experience it.

Karen Deeming

Therapy is a shared process so I think it is important for me to honour your privacy and personal independence and for me to create a non-judgmental nurturing environment so that you feel comfortable enough to talk about issues that are bothering you. My role is to facilitate your work in ways that respect your values, personal resources and capacity for choice within your cultural/spiritual context and recognize how they can sometimes be at odds with your actions or how you feel day to day.

I provide access to immediate support so that you can quickly deal with personal concerns, strains on family life or financial and emotional worries and work towards a more satisfying and resourceful experience of life. We can also work together to clarify the problems and challenges you face, identify changes you would like to make, gain fresh perspectives, consider the consequences of various options and acknowledge the impact of life events on your emotional wellbeing.

Most forms of psychotherapy use only spoken conversation, I can work in this way but also welcome you working more creatively using pictures, writings, movement, poems or dreams. Within the therapeutic relationship I will encourage you to explore emotional and bodily/physical feelings and thoughts/behaviours in the contexts in which they arise. Working in this way is designed to help you improve your well being.

Often as the process of therapy unfolds we move from concern with problems and symptoms towards exploring how you might lead a more fulfilling and creative life. Where on this continuum you choose to work is always up to you. If you decide change is necessary we can work together to identify your choices and their possible effects on your life.

I also provide tools you can use and resources you can signpost to enable you to continue to function effectively and confidently.
